What Is Tufting? A Beginner's Guide to Rug Making

Tufting is a textile craft in which yarn is pushed through stretched tufting cloth with a handheld tufting gun to create the surface of a rug. At Tuft Saigon, a guided workshop lets beginners make a rug without buying specialist equipment first.

How a tufting session works

You begin with a clear design reference, choose yarn colours and learn how to use the frame and tufting gun with guidance. You then fill your design, trim and finish the rug before taking it home.

What the studio provides

Tuft Saigon provides the tufting gun, frame, yarn, backing materials and practical instruction. Bring a simple reference on your phone, as a printout or as a sketch. Icons, initials, flowers, fruit and bold colour-block shapes make practical first projects.
