Tufting vs Macramé vs Weaving: Which Textile Craft Is Right for You?

Tufting, macramé and weaving all use yarn or fibre, but the making process and finished result are different. Choosing the right activity depends on whether you want to make a pile rug, a knotted textile or a woven fabric.

Tufting

Tufting uses a handheld gun to push yarn through stretched cloth. It is a practical choice if you want to create a graphic rug with bold shapes, colour blocks and a soft pile surface.

Macramé

Macramé is built through hand-tied knots. It suits makers who enjoy a slower, cord-based process and decorative wall hangings, plant holders or accessories.

Weaving

Weaving interlaces yarns on a loom. It is well suited to makers interested in texture, structure and repeated patterns.
